An engineer in his 50s has tragically died after an incident on June 14 involving a piling rig on the John Holland/CPB West Gate Tunnel project. His life support was switched off and he died on June 24.
The building industry is dangerous, but workplace fatalities are unacceptable.
The Industry Fatality Policy will be implemented immediately on all sites.
Step 1: Provide a report on the incident to workers on-site.
Step 2: Observe 1 minute silence.
Step 3: Full OHS audit of your site.
"When John Holland built the West Gate bridge 35 workers were killed when it collapsed. Now, nearly 48 years later that same company in a joint venture with CPB has been awarded the West Gate Tunnel project and one worker is already dead.
Workers on construction sites around Melbourne have downed tools today and held meetings in which a minutes silence was observed as a mark of respect. Safety audits will also be conducted. It is unforgivable that any worker is killed on the job let alone on State Government sites that continue to spruik worker safety. Our sincere condolences are with his family, loved ones and co-workers. " - John Setka
